Grandma's PatchWork Quilt
By MaryGrace Patterson

Today I found the patchwork
quilt, grandma, made for me
It had been tucked away
with special memories.

While holding it, warm
thoughts came back to me,
as I remembered when she
made it with vivid clairity

I could see her sititng in her
wooden rocking chair,
sewing on the porch in the
fresh country air

Her hands were worn and calloused,
as she gently stitched away in a
special rhythm, while seams
were bound each day

She joined the many colors,
pastels and bold azures,
working diligently with
fingers quick and sure

The special qiult was made
with dignity and pride
As I hold it now, I feel
the love she stitched inside

I'll always remember grandma,
the love she shared with me
and I'll treasure the quilt she
made, for all eternity

OK, I'm sitting here crying. What wonderful poems and stories. The last was my favorite. My moms wonderful patchwork quilt she made for my oldest was my inspiration to start quilt. All my kids slept with it and loved it and my DGD loves it too. Mom is gone but she tucks my DGD in bed with that quilt.

THE QUILT

As I faced my Maker at last judgement, I knelt before the Lord along with the other souls . Before each of us laid our lives, like the squares of a quilt. An angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life.

But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in everyday life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all.

I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and all the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened. My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty like binding air.

Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of the truth ...The others rose, each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been.

My angel looked upon me, and nodded for me to rise. My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life, and laughter. But there had also been trials of illness and death, and false accusations that took from me my world as I knew it.

I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I had spent many lonely nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life. I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully: each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgemental gaze of those who unfairly judged me.

And now, I had to face the truth. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it had been...I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light. An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around at the others who stared at me with eyes opened wide.

Then I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, The Face of Christ. Then our Lord stood before me, with love and warmth in his eyes. He said: "Every time you gave over your life to me, it became my life, my hardships, and my struggles. Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let me shine thru, until there was more of me than there was of you."

When I finish a quilt I write a story about the quilt, what was going on in the world at that time, stories of the blocks and I always put this story in. I just finished my 2010 cancer quilt and that story will go into the book as it did for all the other quilts I have made. Thank you for putting this story in the Quilting Board so other people can read the story. Edie

LIFE IS LIKE A QUILT

Life is like a patchwork quilt
And each little patch is a day
Some patches are rosy, happy and bright
And some are dark and gray.

But each little patch as it's fitted in
And sewn to keep it together
Makes a finished block in this life of ours,
Filled with sun and rainy weather.

So let me work on Life's patchwork quilt
Through the rainy days and the sun
Tusting that when I have finished my block
The Master may say, "Well Done."

HOW MUCH LIKE A QUILT WE ARE

Some of us are bright and gay; some are quieter, more delicate and subdued
Yet how well we blend together.
The quieter ones set off the colorful
The brighter ones accentuate the pastels
Often, the more fragile pieces hold the sturdy ones together.
Blessed are we to be varied.
All of us are stitched with Love and tied to one another
Reap the benefits of your sewing
Baste consideration into your life
Hem up disagreements, and embellish it all with Love.

May there always be work for your hands to do
May your purse always hold a coin or two
May the sun always shine on your windowpane
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain
May the hand of a friend always be near you
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you
The best kind of sleep beneath Heaven above
Is under a quilt Handmade with Love.

God bless us everyone. Edie
