After seeing the quilt I agree that hearts in every block might be the way to go. I would also change the threads from white to red depending on the block colors.

I agree with juliasb -- quilt with red thread in the white block and with white thread in the red block. I would begin in the center/middle of the quilt and work my way to the outside.

Some bernina machines have built in quilt blocks in the embroidery bank. You could use those in the open spaces after you stitch in the ditch to stabilize the quilt.
