I would love to look into purchasing a quilting machine.
I don't know anything about them, except, I know I
want it to have the stitch regulator. I was wondering
if anyone has suggestion, on a machine, and is it profitable
to purchase one, and be able to make money from it?
I live in a very good area, and people are always asking me
if I know anyone who does it. But I would need something
that wouldn't take me long to perfect. Is that possible?
    Would love opinions.

it takes time and practice to develope skill on any kind of machine, if you want to be good, fast, I'd say get one that you can use the computerized programs on.

Yes, like Kathy said, it takes practice. And it depends on what you want out of the machine as to how long you will need to practice. My hubby does the quilting in our family. We got our Gammill in July 2007. We were practicing on friends quilts in August & September, opened our business in October.
I have that same Gammill up for sale in the classified section here on the forum. Take a look at it.

We want one so bad we can taste it but just can't afford it right now. We met a wonderful lady who has been quilting for a while. She told us to go to quiltopolis and look for used machines. She also mentioned going to quilt shows and trying to buy a demonstrator. We've seen them on Craiglist as well. The main thing she told us was not to plan on getting rich with it. She said not believe the people who tell you a person can easily make $40k a year using one. When it comes to quilting no one makes anything easily. It plain hard work eventhough it's extremely rewarding and theraputic.

I've seen a few people here mention they were getting new long arms and were planning on having customers soon after setting it up. I don't think this is feasible as many others have stated there's a learning curve involved like anything else. It may take someone a year or more of honing skills before one can sell service. Others may take to it quicker. But, I wouldn't plan on being able to make a profit or charging to do tops until I was satisfied with my skill level.

I have been looking recently. You can get a machine, a frame and a regulator for about $2500. But if you want a computerized one, you will pay MUCH more. It all depends how much capital you have ti invest on one.

I am going to buy mine this afternoon! I am getting a Tin Lizzie LS with a Grace Pinnacle frame. I don't plan on going into business, since I have a full time job, but I will agree to do some for family and friends once I am comfortable doing it. I am so excited!

These are the ones that I have found for used machines over the last couple of years. If you want a new set up let me know 'cause I have a list of them too! :)
