as a longarmer, I have done this. I dont like to, but the customers dont want to pay for custom and they want it quilted. just done. some of the the applique is bad and need the quilting to hold it in place. but they are not the show quilts my friend does and she hand quilts hers.

If there is hand applique involved, I usually echo quilt around the edges of it. Sometimes, if the piece is large, I might do a small quilt "design" inside the applique just to keep it from bubbling, but not through the edges of the applique, no.

As a handquilter I have often quilted on the applique. Usually as an accent around the various componets like the parts of a flower etc. If the applique is large it would almost require some quilting to stabilize the quilts. I recently worked on a large quiilt for our church's 250th anniversary. The heart of it was a 36"x36" reproduction of a photo of the church all fused. I actually used different color threads on each part of the applique basically to secure the hundreds of pieces of the applique. The creator blew up a photo of the church with it's famous oak tree and part of the very old cemetery to the 36" square size had it laminated and then cut it in to templates for the applique. The building was gray formstone with white stone trim and of course stained glass windows. The detail was very intricate. It was necessary for me to put at least one quilting stitch in every appliqued detail to keep them from falling off as the fusing failed. My fingers may never forgive me for quilting through all of that fusing but it did turn out wonderfully.
