Does your Pfaff have the IDT? Or do you need a walking foot?
I have 2 Pfaff w/IDT dsms, never had the problem that you're describing. Don't stretch the backing fabric, just get it smooth and tape it down. Also if you come to an area when quilting that has a bit of fullness, "feed" it to the presser foot and that helps keep the quilt straight. Also if your machine has the ability to lessen the foot pressure, do that too. I have quilted with Bernina,antique Singer machines that I have a walking foot for, also done FMQ with a darning foot.
I've been machine quilting on a dsm since 1993 and have learned much from trial and error.
