Quilting
Some of the better things about quilting as an acitivity -
The basic premise is a top layer of fabric, a filling, another layer of fabric - and the three layers are held together somehow.
(I wonder if glueing counts now?)
One can start out relatively inexpensively - and go on to mega-spending
There are lots of ways of creating a top/flimsy - piecing, one piece, applique, embroidery - lots of variations on those - skill levels from "this is a needle?" t0 breathtaking work - no need to get bored -
All skill levels are welcome to play -
One can participate in groups - or work on a project all by oneself -
One does not need to have special shoes to work on a project -
Down sides to quilting -
People seem to mind if they step on a dropped pin or needle
It can become obsessive/addictive
Playing darts or pool seem to be more acceptable in bars than piecing and/or knitting
One has to put the fabric down while eating, showering, or driving

All of the above is true. I enjoy making quilts. Fast and easy is good for me. I donate and give away most I make. Since I really don't know how they will be cared for I don't want to work too long on them.

upside:
- the joy from recipients- Usually wedding or baby gifts. or no reason! I love visiting friends and seeing the art quilt I gave them being used!
- outlet for my designing/sketching- My favorite part is drawing out a new idea--then the process begins.
- occasionally must stop and straighten up- but don't get crazy!
- too many ideas-not enough time
