I have an antique quilt that has seen much love. I have been able to date it to some where around 1900-1910. The backing is silk and has held up beautifully. It may be difficult to sew because of slippage, but silk is warm. I would love to try this fabric.

The reason that you see the degradation of the silk fabric in old quilts and other items was the process used to dye the fabric. There was a chemical reaction that hardened the silk fiber and caused it to crack and break because of brittleness. That is generally not the case in the silk fabric produced now. The fabric is not as strong as cotton or linen fabric but that is not necessarily important in a quilted application. The Radiance fabric by Kaufman is wonderful and lovely to work with. Silk is wonderful to work with and just has an elegance you cannot get with another fiber.

I haven't heard of Radiance, but the silk rather scares me. When I want a silky feel to a quilt I use Northcott cotton which is the most amazing cotton out there. Well that is just my opinion, but when they say they make cotton that feels like silk they aren't kidding. I have some silk that I've had for over ten years. I keep thinking I will make a blouse out of it, but quilting has given me so much happiness that I don't make garments much anymore. Perhaps I could use it for something that wouldn't get a lot of wear, like a bed pillow set. Good luck on whatever you decide and thank you for letting us know about this new product.

I haven't heard of or seen this fabric but I will be on the lookout for it. It sounds like it would be great in a wall hanging.

I've done machine embroidery on Radiance too and it turned out wonderfully. I love the fabric.

The Silk radiance if I remember correctly is a cotton with a silk finish it is yummy to the touch and I have used pieces in several quilts and is wonderful to work with. It is still cotton just a different finish on it.

Glad you asked about this fabric. I have 2 bundles of this that I ordered from MSQC and have not used it yet. Still trying to figure out what I will use it for. It is beautiful fabric. If I remember right when I ordered it the description said it was washable. We will see.

I'm just now discovering this fabric. Ordered a yard of and fell in love. Now I'm having a time finding it in different colors. Are they doing away with it??
