    Question Rag Quilt Question

When making a rag quilt is it flannel that you use or can it be cotton? I was thinking about using up a lot of my 5 inch squares that I have but they are not flannel. I have some flannel squares but not as many as i do the cotton ones.

just wanting to know what others think. Thanks!

it can certainly be cotton. I recently made one with corduroy squares and cotton squares too.

Homespun is very popular for rag quilts because it ravels nicely. I don't think batiks would work well (though I could be wrong about that) because of their tight weave. I've used flannel and corduroy, have seen them with homespun and "regular" quilting cotton. I've also seen them done with fleece - no raveling, but the curling gives a different look. I don't use batting (3 layers of fabric instead), so there's no need for any quilting and all layers can be cut the same size.

You can use cotton but I think I would keep to one type of fabric and not mix them.

I have made several rag quilts with cotton and flannel mixed. I use one layer of cotton (top) and usually 2 to 3 layers of flannel (middle and bottom), depending on who the quilt is for. 3 layers of flannel is very warm and somewhat heavy and I usually make those for my DD, who freezes in the middle of summer. The cotton and flannel both fray quite nicely together.
