I did a rag quilt for a customer (pics below) using two different size blocks, and the smaller ones were 3" x 5" (finished size). I don't think that I would have gone much smaller than that, though.

I usually use 6.5" inch squares. But for no particular reason.

I have used as small as 2 1/2 inch squares for rag quilts. Followed a cross stitch pattern to make a quilt. Usually I use 6 inch squares.

I did 1 6 inch square and the rest are stripped and raggy, It's so easy to make one in a few hours that way. I make them 6 feet long and the width of the fabric. I do not put a binding on, I just sew around the whole quilt 2 times then start snipping.
