I would also think it was started at the beginning of the war with the intention of having it finished for the end.
A wonderful piece of history and I think this one really should be researched for the history. A good conservatory can help with dating and appraising it. I really think you have a great find in this quilt.

That is really special and the comments above are right on target. A division of Vogue patterns used to publish embroidery patterns that had the florals like this quilt. I would suggest that you contact a quilt guild if you are not a member and ask them about the state organization-all states have them. If you contact them they can recommend an appraiser or quilt historian who could really be of help in identifying the quilt and its components.

Congratulations on your quilt find! Truly a real treasure, and I'm glad that someone has it who will appreciate it. I cannot imagine any of my brothers or sisters selling a quilt that our grandmothers or our mother made. Those are truly heirloom pieces, IMHO! Treasure this quilt. Again, congratulations!

That was my thought exactly --- so sad that a family member didn't want to keep it. The embroidery is perfect, she had a very steady hand and good eyes when she stitched it.
