Removing stabilizer from quilt back.

Removing stabilizer from quilt back.
I am sure that this has been dealt with before, but right now I am stuck. I did some embroidery on some of this quilt, and now after washing and drying it, the stuff I put on with some temporary adhesive now seems to be permanent. I have been picking it off bit by bit, but now find I am pulling out stitches with the paper. Is there something I can use to get this stuff off without ruining this quilt? Thank God I used dissolvible ?sp) (washaway) stabilizer on most of it.

what exactly did you use? if we know what the product is we may have some ideas. some adhesives are permanent if ironed on, some are 'moveable' while wet, but dry permanent, some wash away nicely. you might try goo-gone or some product like that, or maybe using a brown paper bag placed over the area & ironing might 'melt' it and the brown paper may soak it up...you could also contact the company who makes the product and ask them what will take it off.

Did you wash it & dry it with the stabilizer on it?? The heat from the dryer would set the adhesive. You should never wash it with the stabilizer on it unless it's a wash away or you want the stabilizer to stay on the item for ever.

I hoop just the stabilizer. I just pin it really well, then turn the speed way down and do the fix or outline stitching (or whatever you r brand of machine calls it) that secures the item outside the embroidery area. I babysit this process, then turn the speed back up & let it go. You need to make sure that the pins are outside the embroidery zone, but there's plenty of room.
Also, if you are embroidering on an item that's already sandwiched, you can hoop the whole sandwich without stabilizer. Can't do this with a really puffy batting, but W&N works fine. Do a test sandwich first!!
