The smaller cutting mat is great for taking with you to a quilting class, but for home use I would always go with the large one. As someone else pointed out, your ruler will lie flat, and is great for squaring off quilt corners.

I have quite a few mats, I agree go as big as you can afford. For rotating go with the 12 X 12. I also have 2 different sizes of the cut n press which I adore!

Definitely go with the 17"x17" rotating mat. I have the 12"x12" rotating mat and find it too small at times to use.

I have both sizes and use them both all the time. the little one is perfect to use for squaring up small blocks or trimming dog ears. i keep it next to my machine and its so convenient.

Definitely go the biggest you can afford or that your certificate is good for.

My problem with green/blue mats is that they smell. Go to Joann's and stand next to all the green mats and see if the odor bothers you. So I have a mat that is white. Can't remember the name off hand, but if you have issues with odor like I do, I'd avoid the colored mats. I know some people say they don't smell or it doesn't bother them. But I'd check it out just in case it might bother you.

Penny, the new mat smells like skunk to me, I tried a new trick just tonight on a new mat I just got, soak it in the tub with about 4 quarts of water & 1/4 cup white vinegar for 10 to 15 min. It worked!!
