You mark the 7/8" measurement line you want with the tape. Don't have to re measure each time.

It sounds like you're going to be cutting half square triangles, for those, I just cut an inch larger than the finished size, then you don't have to mess with the 7/8" measurements.

If i'm cutting a few of one size, I put a piece of painters masking tape on the ruler for easy site lines. I use an Omnigrid ruler for that. good luck.

Most of my rulers, mixture of makers have 1/8" marks. Sorry I would go to 1/4" and a full inch. Then trim to size much easier and accurate.
