I must be strange. I keep seeing everyone suggesting that you have to have a 6x24 ruler, that is what they use the most.I have one, but rarely use it. My indispensable rulers are my 3.5x18, shape cut, and 6.5x6.5. To me 6x24 just seems awkward. I have a 24x36 mat, but prefer to fold my fabric one more time and use the smaller rulers. Is anyone else like me?

there are probably ones that i would use more if i had more rulers. i remember saying that the 6x24 would be a good starter because it is so versatile. you can use it for so many different things.

6x24 for me. Folding the fabric an extra time is another place for the seam line to get wonky (if the fabric isn't folded exactly straight). After that, I use my 9.5x9.5 for almost everything, and I could happily manage with just those 2 rulers (I do have a few more, however). I have two 24x36 mats on my table, running 36" back from the front so the 24" ruler fits well, as long as I don't have a pile of junk at the back.

I like the 6 X 24 best when cutting strips. I square corners of quilts with the 15" square, but I also use the small squares for squaring up blocks that have the 45 angle line. I sew my blocks a little larger, and square them with a small square that has the 16ths inch measure on them. Olfa makes them.
