I use safety pins only and keep them closed in a deep plastic container.

Open on a pincushion just for safety pins-saves time not to have to reopen them when I need to use them.

Leave them open. When ready to use, just pick up a "little wad" and shake them, and they will fall where you can get to individual pins.

A friend gave me a square tea tin can, for my safety pins....and I store them open. Sometimes, they get tangled, but it usually resolves itself, when I am pin basting a quilt.

I keep mine open in several Rubbermaid blue lid containers; one for each size 1" - 2". I have a little strawberry pin cushion that sharpens the pins and add the little plastic dehydrators that come with my meds to keep the moisture out of the contains so the pins don't rust. Some times I use the basting spray and pin at the same time. When my pins get gunky, I clean them and the dehydrators help with the moister.
