Its good I think to have as many tricky ones as possible in one quilt when you are a beginner but to the more experienced ladies do what you like.

I like to choose blocks I like, but in different sizes and then give them a unique setting. Lots of fun.

I have copied a block for each state hope to make them into a states quilt, all different sizes so will have to blend them in.

The black and white quilt in my avatar is completely a sampler---63 different blocks! I just had lots of block patterns and shop hop blocks, etc and wanted to make it a one of a kind quilt. Samplers are whatever YOU want them to be!

I used to teach a beginner class that ended up with a sampler. Each week we tried something a learn something new and different -- squares, then triangles, something that was sew and applique like a Dresdan Plate, a four patch, 9 patch, a square with curves, an all applique. In other words, a sample of every type of assembly that I could think of.

I am doing one from my LQS they give me a swatch of fabric and the directions for a block at the end of the year l will have 12 different blocks to create my sampler. Each month the store hangs our blocks up for votting
