Default Selvages

I’ve cut off many selvages and saved them, some with not much colored fabric. I would like to use them to make a bag, but don’t really know how. Any help would be appreciated.

When I use them, I sew them onto a piece of muslin. My selvages are "fatter" then normal because I like to see a little of the fabric too. I sew them with a straight stitch really close to the edge of the selvage.

Do you mean something like this??

I collect selvage strips too and have made some cute things over the years. As Doggramma said, sew them onto a muslin base then you can do pretty much anything you like!

Please show us some pictures when you're finished.

I would suggest finding a bag pattern you like. Piece the selvages (with or with out foundation, your choice) until the 'fabric' you make is larger than your pattern pieces.

I always cut my selvages off at 1.5" so that some of the fabric shows. I save them up in bags and then sew them together when the bag is overflowing, ending up with 6" squares. You could also use a muslin foundation to sew them diagonally to squares. In any case, use just as you would any other squares. It's fun. There are a couple of books available with ideas.

Here's a link showing how Lynnie25 makes her selvage appliques. The same process can be used for a square or rectangle needed for your bag.

Crochet them is one way, another way is to sew them onto muslin backing and then make bag, tote, etc.
