    I use single handquilting thread and I knot at each spot. This way, if one thread comes apart, it will not unravel the binding completely.

    I have no idea what a ladder stitch is...

    I make quilts for the children at the hospital and we always use double....because they can be washed alot...I guess it's up to you...
