I'm going to try it as placemats with matching trivets. You're right, I don't think the floor thing is practical.

That was my thought too. I don't know why it can't be done with a zipper foot. Just seems to me though that to put it on the floor is a waste of rather expensive fabric.

If wanting to make one for a bath room why not use a towel or bath sheet? It would be really absorbent.
I would definitely add the cording and use the zipper foot as I go rather than threading the cord through. If you are getting new linens you could even recycle by piecing several of your older ones together to get some different color and pattern combinations. Ann in TN

Just an afterthought on the corded rug. You will have to have a sewing machine that is up to the job of sewing through that cording when attaching the binding especially to the ends of the rug. There are plenty of machines out there that simply wouldn't be up to the job. Ann in TN

This is so true. But the other alternative would be to trim the clothesline so it wasn't in the seamline area. The more I think about it, the whole process seems like a whole lotta work. Think I will save the fabric for something else less challenging to work with.
