Yesterday I was cleaning my sewing room and picked up something that had straight pins in it. One stuck me really deep and I actually yelled, it hurt really bad. About five minutes later, I noticed the whole top of my finger was swollen. DH and I keep an eye on it and about 15 minutes later, the swelling went down. In about 30 minutes my finger tip was turning color. I have the biggest bruise now that is in the front of my nail, we think the pin went into my vein or artery. So I guess I would have to say that my pins are sharp. I generally buy the very thin sharp pins from Joanns.

These are, by far, my favorite brand of pin for piecing and most other applications:

I've had the same pack of Clover Flower Head pins for 5 years, and they're still sharp.

I had some extremely fine Iris pins - bought them for heirloom sewing. Finally used one on a flower girl's satin dress and it left black marks. I gave them to a sewer who really loved those pins. She said she shook them around in some muslin and there was black stuff on the muslin. She then cleaned the pins and they are fine. They were shipped in a tin, and I suspect that someone forgot to clean the coating off before packing.

I have some of the flower head pins - they do work for garment sewing. Some of the glass headed ones won't. Why, I don't know. They didn't seem to like sweatshirt fleece, wouldn't go through it.

I have both Clover and flower head pins and find they have worked fine for what I do. I have also used binding clips on a few occasions...

Clover Patchwork pins are the best! Extra fine, extra sharp, glass heads.

I use glass head extra fine sharp pins. They are Clovers. Bought mine at a local quilt shop but Connecting Threads and Nancys notions both carry them - probably many other places too.
