The best way to remove a Sharpie mark is to go over it again with a Sharpie and then wipe away while wet. This won't work for fabric or other absorbent surfaces though. I use a lead pencil for all fabric markings that won't be seen. For black or dark fabric I use white a blackboard chalk stick sharpened to a point.

I got curious so I did an experiment today. It's not anything in the best press. I have the same reaction when I sprayed with water or spray starch.

I was actually going to use the crayola washable crayons but thought since I didn't need to take the marking out (they were on the foundation) that wasn't necessary. I sure wish I'd used them now!

Well sorry to hear about your issue. Can I ask what color sharpie you used?

I just wanted to make a quilt of valor label. I ordered a blank template from Spoonsflower. I wrote the names and date with a red sharpie and when I was the quilt with the label.. all of the writing bled. I am so disappointed. I am wondering what to do now.

I do appreciate the link for making fun crafts that oksewglad posted. Amazing how lovely the wind chime was the crafter posted for her grade school auction! This is like turning lemons into lemonayde!

Thanks for the tip. Ion a different note, I use Crayola markers all the time.for marking my quilts before quilting. But you cannot iron your quilt once you have marked it. We are always learning in the craft eh?

I learned the hard way awhile ago that Sharpies aren't permanent for anything if it doesn't say so on the pen itself. I thought that being permanent was part of "sharpie-ness," but apparently not.

Now we know that even saying "permanent" isn't enough for fabric.

DD used Sharpie on a bedsheet, labeling blood spot that washed out. Sharpie never did wash out in normal laundry!
I, too, have used alcohol (hand sanitizer, especially) to remove Sharpie ink from desks, walls, and laminated signs.

Next time, try using a Pentel Gel Roller for Fabric - it says permanent - and I believe that it will be.

I have not been pleased with the Pigma pens, either. By the way, they were designed for use on paper - even though the fabric stores are selling them.
