I would have thought that cheaper fabrics would be worse than a good quality sheet, just my opinion of course.

BTW I use sheets all the time, especially for Project Linus quilts as they get laundered so much more than normal quilts and bedding is made for that.

Your explaination of using sheets is right on. I too use the cotton flat sheets from WalMart. The Walmart near me has a great color selection. I use the flat sheet measurements to size my quilts. Then I am confident it will fit nicely on the bed.
The lady who does my LA quilting never complains about the sheets.
For Quilts for Kids I can back two quilts with one WalMart twin sheet for $5.00. Can't beat that bargain!

I have recently started using garage sale/thrift store sheets for bindings. So far it's worked great.

I never even thought about that - but have notice that there is pilling my sheets that are 200 thread count after multiple washings. I usually use inexpensive flannel for something that is going on a bed so it doesn't slide off and is 'snuggly'.

Thanks for all the info. I just assumed I should get the higer thread count. I was trying to get to sears today, we do have a Winner's store, no Ikea.

I mostly use sheets for backing. My 15" Bailey Home quilter handles sheets just fine. Before getting my Bailey, I sent my quilts to Long Armers and they did not object to the sheets.

I shop the 'Goodie Stores' or the Goodwill or other second hand stores for sheets best place and price! just buy the 100% cotton ones!

The other tip I would point out, I did post it somewhere else forgot where duh, you can get 14 yards of binding, yep 14 from one pillowcase! So when doing scrappy's or charity quilts remember those pillowcases lying in your airing cupboard or charity shops :thumbup:

Be sure to shrink the sheets first!

They can become amazingly smaller after washing...
