Should I buy a sit down quilting machine?

To me the beauty of having a sit down machine is that you have a machine dedicated to just quilting. I have a Juki 2010 that I love but hesitate to quilt sometimes because I have to clear out behind and to the left. It would be terrific to just be able to sit down and quilt without the cleaning.

I have a HQ simply sixteen that I recently purchased. I'm still in the learning curve but I'm finding it so much easier then trying to put a big quilt under my domestic sewing machine.
I purchased it from Hayes sewing machine which is in Delaware.
The machine is beautiful and easy-to-use I think you should check out the stand up machines also besides the sit down machines. It doesn't take up anymore room than the sit down does.

Absolutely go for a sit down. It is way better on your body than standing for hours and yes, just practice, practice, practice. I offer to quilt charity quilts for my guild quilt cupboard on my Sweet Sixteen and get to try lots of different things without great anxiety. Ask the dealer if you can take one home and try it. My dealer let me do that and of course she knew once I had it I could never let it go. It was a demo machine so got a nice discount. I also did not get the stitch regulator and never regretted that decision.

I use to think I would like a sit down quilting machine. Not so sure now. Not really an option as my room isn't big enough. Doesn't stop me from thinking about it. I have two 9" throat machines I use for piecing and quilting. I can quilt a queen and plan to make smaller quilts only.
I would give it a lot of thought about which one you really want. Good luck deciding.

I have Sweet Sixteen and love it. Handiquilter makes the Tiara, I think, and is cheaper. I did not buy the extension, but my husband made them for the price of a piano hinge, an old countertop and some wood pieces to hold them up. lot cheaper than the extensions. I also have the mat that eliminates the bump.

It does take practice, but jump in with both feet...........afterall it is just fabric. The large throat means I no longer have to struggle to get the quilt through the throat and still maintain even stitches. No more back and neck problems either as it just glides across the table. I, too, have the slider and stitch regulator which I love. It took me awhile to get used to the SR but I made myself use it. (Some people complain that the noise is distacting as the machine tries to keep up with your hands.) Definitely try one out at the dealer first, but after that first try I was sold.

I have a Babylock Unity which I love but I don't do much quilting on it. I think part of the problem is that I usually make larger quilts and I have quilted a king size quilt on a DSM and it was really hard. My local dealer has 2 used Tiara's on sale and a Sweet Sixteen. I guess my question is- should I get the sit down machine or stick it out with learning to quilt better with my Unity? I think part of the reason I am so hesitant to quilt is that I always see mistakes in my quilting. I would like to get better at it. Also love the rulers that you can now get with the FM machines- but I see that Westalee also has rules for dsm. Sorry this is rambling but just confused about if I should make the purchase. Part of me says go for it, but it is still a sizeable purchase so I want to make sure I really use it.
before you purchase anything. check out "longarm university". there are used machines always for sale on the site. mom and I purchased one 2-3 years ago and still learning, but having fun. I have quilted on a domestic machine as well, but the longer is so much better. anyway, good luck on your search
