i only have scraps because i made other things.

i started quilting because of log cabins. i made one this year, and it is a testimony to the life of needle and thread and i have lived so far. i don't shop for shopping's sake for anything - fabric included. i don't really understand just having a whole lot of fabric in a cupboard or a bin or whatever. i shop because i need something or i am staring a new project. i don't really want for anything, so i always have something better to do than shop you know?

i buy fabric for projects. the leftovers go in the bin. it took me 20 years to have enough fabric to make that log cabin. i suspect it might be another 20 before i have enough fabric to do another one.

but i sure do like scrappy quilts

for all the reasons above I love scrappies, plus I am a da__ Yankee. have to use it up, and wear it out. Hate to waste even a scrap too small to sew - those go in dog beds for the shelter.

If you join the moratorium on buying quilting fabric for 2013 it encouraged you to use every little scrap...a good thing in my sewing room!

I think you are right. The other day I saw a post about the confetti quilt and started cutting up my scraps for confetti. Being on SS I save where I can. Besides I love scrappies.

There are a couple of board members who host fabric swaps in various sizes: FQ's, 10.5", 6.5", 5", 2.5", 1.5" squares and a 2.5"strip I think. Check the swap/trade threads. Great way to get lots of variety if you need that.

Personally, I love scrappy quilts - but the fabric isn't coming from scrap bags. When I shop, I buy half-yard cuts (maybe a yard if I love it) and and put them in my stash. Those are cut up for my "scrap" quilts.

I love scrap quilts. That's all my mother made. She used scraps from sewing clothes. I love to study her quilts and remember dresses I made for myself, my daughter, and the ones mom made and scraps from home dec like curtains, table cloths, etc. Brings back memories.

I do scrappiest but do not enjoy as much as a balanced quilt with the same patterns on both sides. Art quilts are also an area I don't like . I can admire the skill and art but not the finished project at times makes me very uncomfortable. .
