I didn't find my exact situation in search. I am notorious for buying first then thinking of the consequences. At Hancock Fabrics I found a piece of 100% Polyester suede, 60 " wide in a beautiful shade of red. Also, in the same shade there was another piece with a double wedding ring etched into the fabric. So I pay an exorbitant amt of money on this for my daughter's bed covering. I have eight yards total and it will cover the queen bed with a good amt of overhang. I can't call it a quilt but am doing it in place of a quilt. I won't cut the fabric but instead will use applique and decorative threads and stitches to make her "quilt." This is my problem: I never even thought about the bleeding. And it bleeds. Thoughtlessly I washed AND DRIED twice and the color catcher I used came out the same color as the fabric. Question: Will Retayne work after the fabric has been washed and dried or will I just have to live with it? Also, can it be drycleaned if I put Warm and White batting in the middle. What about backing? Stick with poly or cotton, and what color? Wish I'd given this more thought. I will not throw this fabric out. It cost me too much and is much too beautiful. I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks to this forum I have somewhere to go with my quilting problems. At least you listen even if there is no solution. Thank you.

I'm sorry this happened. But I'm thinking that since you dried it in the dryer that you may have set in the stains where the color ran. sorry I cant help.

There are no stains...this is new fabric that I was pre-washing. I want to know if I can set the color now. Nothing has been ruined because of it. Thanks for your reply.

I would use the retayne as directed. Then use a swatch of the fabrics to test for bleeding. Be sure to keep us posted on the outcome:)

You say it bleeds! you haven't sew'in it yet right? well I would wash again! over, as many times as it takes til it stops bleed and finaly comes clear. you could put a piece of cheap muslin in each time to be a test and when that was not a shade of pink/red you can say the bleed stopped. 8-)

when you have a 'bleeder' it is necessary to keep washing it until no more color loss- retayne may help==it is certainly worth a try- or even bubble jet set- or vinegar...
anything is worth trying...
unfortunately at times there is a fabric that will run until there is no color left....and expense seems to not matter.
and also unfortunately---red is the biggest problem.

would not hurt to call a reputable dry cleaners and ask some questions too.

Your second fabric is the same shade? Maybe I am not getting the picture, but does it matter then if it bleeds? You will be the one doing the washing when necessary, right?

I will try to clarify here. I have not cut it, nor have I sewn it. I have only pre-washed it. The second fabric is the same shade but will be sewn to two sides and bottom to make the overhang. This will be the quilt top.

To that back ground I want to outline the double wedding ring design in decorative thread/stitches/or embroidery. This fabric is the exact size of the top of her queen size mattress. The plain fabric (same color, sans design)will provide two sides and bottom overhang.

What about batting? Stay with polyester? Hi loft? What fabric would make good backing for suede?

You can tell that I didn't think this one through! Hancock's is remodeling and I was getting what I could while available. This sounds about as clear as mud.
I am going to order the Retayne (no store here has it)and keep washing, talk to a cleaners, keep checking back here, and something will turn up. One of us will find the answer. I'm sure of it. :) Thanks.

Could you contact the manufacturer and ask them what might help?

Or ask the store for some help?
