Yes, they are hard to find. We have Ollie's Outlet, where I find them. I try to get just a cheap queen fitted sheet for putting on my dogs bed, a queen camper mattress on the floor. The only trouble with getting the flat sheets is that they are usually of an inferior quality and shrink a lot. I guess for quilt backing that would work fine. For the dogs I don't care because they rip them up after a while anyway. I am always mending them.

I, too, have been looking for sinle sheets.... broke down and bought two sets from Haband to use for quilts. Figure the fitted and pillow cases would be a nice treat to match the back of the quilts I am making.

Somewhere in my travels I was told to NEVER use sheets for backing a quilt. Don't know why - just NEVER. Can anyone tell me anything about the subject? And you are right about the sheets being sold in sets - I still have a wonderful water bed & am down to 3 flat queen sized sheets, can't find them anywhere.

In Ontario Canada, buying single sheets is not a problem. I buy them for quilt backs all the time, both for my own use and for our guild's Community Projects. I buy them in quantities when on sale ($5 - $10) and can get them in cotton or flannel. My local Giant Tiger (small town department type store) often has seconds (even name brand ones made in the U.S.A., not just the made in Pakistan of China). I also buy them regualarly at Len's Mills stores, Sears and occassionally Walmart (quality is sometimes an issue with loose weaves and low thread counts). I try always to buy King or Queen size so that I have plenty of fabric. My 22 year old son who was with me on my latest sheet buying expedition commented "Mom, how many mis-matched sheets can one family use anyway?" Happy sheet hunting!
