I use the default setting and I never back stitch. I don't shorten it up unless I'm paper piecing. I don't want to have to pick out tiny stitches if I goof! As long as that seam will be crossed by another, which all will, there is no need to back stitch, plus, it adds unnecessary bulk.

I have fixed that by stitching around the outside edge (1/8") catching all the seams. It won't show when the quilt is done and gives the piecing stability.
Not sure what you mean by pulling against the seam. I do like your tip on sewing on the outside edge 1/8".

Thank you for all the replies. I am sure I am using to long of a stitch. I have been using 2.8. I will drop down to atleast a 2 and see what happens.

my default length is 2 and that is what I use. The only time I ever backstitch is when it will be the edge of the quilt, otherwise, the seam is always crossed by another seam, and is sturdy enough for me.

this is going to depend on if you have a rotary or osillating bobbin but I was always told to use the smallest stitch possible that you can still remove if necessary......remember my sewing teacher calling larger stitches "just basting"

Default on most machines is 2.5. That works.

Usually 2.5 for me. I use a locking stich on the beginning of chain piecing.

Make sure that the stitches are properly forming - and the tensions are where you want them to be. If a thread is 'floating' on one surface - the stitches pull out very easily

I, too, use the default stitch and never backstitch and haven't had a problem...yet!
