Boxes of Strings was featured here sometime last winter. I made one in March, but I didn't make it as the pattern said. I fixed it so that all the light strings and all the dark strings had no seams. The seams were in the black pieces. That way you need to make several different kinds of blocks, but I like it with the seams in the black since you really can't see them there if the seams are pressed open well.

For your granddaughter, I would suggest the Rail Fence. It works up easily for a newbie.
