I bought a mat at Walmart, pink on one side yellow on the other, no smell, been using it a couple years with no problems.

At least you realized what the smell was before the electrician showed up ... that would have been worse!

I had a mat that stunk once and I put it outside, under the porch, for a day or two and viola the smell was gone :D

Same thing happened to me - only I bought one like that at JoAnn's without realizing how much it gives off odor. Two years later I can use it, but between times it stays out in our garage on a nail. It is pink on one side and green on the other. I'll have to try that vinegar rub down!
