Default Term for type of quilt

Is there a name/term for a quilt that is a whole cloth of fabric upon which you apply your appliques instead of applying them to individual blocks? I know a whole cloth quilt is plain fabric that is used to show off the design of quilting. I have never heard of anyone constructing an applique quilt without making it in blocks. Can it be done this way? If you did it this way would it present any problems for a LA?

Here's a sample of a beautiful one I came across the other day:

Here's another one from this board - she pieced her back but not into blocks.
Mixed opinions on whether or not she should cut it up into squares/blocks, but I think it looks sensational like it is:

It should pose NO problem for your LA-er, and actually might free her up artistically as there are no "confined" spaces to quilt.

I think it's a great idea.
What kind of motifs are you considering?

It's a black cloth with jewel tone fleur de lis on it. I have been working - actually not working- on it for about 9 months - had set it aside to do some paintings and thought maybe I could get started quilting before Christmas. Then I thought I would rather not do blocks. I had finished some blocks but these I thought I would use for pillowshams. or whatever. There has been a LARGE learning curve on this quilt! LOL So I could even start completely over and it would all be for the better.

Thank you for the link to the quilt with the butterflies. It is beautiful!

Sounds lovely - I bet the fleurs de lis really pop on the black.
Good luck with it!

And back to your original question - I'd probably refer to it as a wholecloth applique or appliqued wholecloth quilt.
I think other quilters would understand the term.

Some quick Google searches show both those terms being used:
