Baby powder in a sock as a pouncer works on lighter colors because it is not white, and easier to see because it will not move until you wash it. I have no idea what to use on white since I have never put it in a quilt.

Hreat idea! I'm going to look in my classroom. I used a lot of chalk before we went to white boards instead!

Thanks for the idea about the baby toothbrush. I usually use a terry cloth shop rag, but it always helps to have additional 'tools' to go to.

I use white class chalk too. Used dryer sheets remove it well also. Just rub it out. I have also used Avon powder in the cardboard tube and baby powder with stencils when I've ran out of chalk.

When I was doing the little brown bird quilt, on a navy background - I found the fingernail whitener pencil also worked well, and can be wiped away using a damp cloth.

I use the chalk on black or dark colours. Shows up great and I have found it rubs off as you sew leaving little to remove at the end.
tip, remove all chalk before washing as it could stay on.
