I agree with sewbizgirl about just quilting it and using a thicker batting. I would not “remake” mom’s quilt. It is her work that you are passing on to your son. You are finishing her work, not redoing her work. IMHO. Great quilt. Hope to see it finished. Ellen

First - it is a gift from your mother and from you to your son -. Do not stress over it. Second - some of the 'not flat' might work out fine when you use a thick batting and it keeps it puffy. Third - quilts have been made for centuries using lots of different fabrics, it's still works. Fourth - mistakes are ok! I call them design elements. If there is one area that really, really bothers you, then take that apart and try to make it flat, But, chances are it is not as bad as you think and finished, it will show even less.

Update on this quilt. I was ready to cut it into smaller pieces but the little voice in my heart said to try the spray starch and steaming trick first, just give it a try. So I did and amazingly a lot of the bumps and unevenness did come out! I still cut off about six inches from the sides and a foot or so from the ends but it looks like I will have a good sized quilt! I plan on some sashing to cover the edges and a 10" blue frame. The cut off parts will give me some to frame for my son who Loved that idea, and maybe enough for some hot pads or something for other family members.

Thank you all for your help! I'm sure I will be back for more as I get into the project!
