I machine bind all my quilts, but in 2 steps not one. I machine stitch the binding to the front and then fold the binding over to the back and pin secure it. I then stitch in the ditch on the front with invisible thread - checking every few inches to make sure I am catching the back side of the binding. My Viking Rose has a great stitch that makes it look like the stitching was done by hand.

You can get a foot for binding for almost any sewing machine out there. I have one for my treadle. There are a couple of problems, however. The big one is that most will not handle the thickness of the quilt sandwich. The Martelli system is the only one I know of that is for quilting and is designed to handle it. The other thing is that I have never been able to get the corners to come out, either with the 'normal' binding foot or the martelli. Probably not enough patience or practice.

perfect timing... I haven't practiced machine binding in a long while and have a charity crib quilt so I will use it to practice on. In November I took a machine class wherein the instructor had us use many of our different feet/attachments and one of our tutorials was using the flat fell foot for binding!

The Martelli Co. has one. It's called Kwik Bind. I bought it at a quilt show in Houston one year. I promptly brought it home and misfiled it in my sewing room. I ran across it when I finally was straightening up my room. It has a DVD and the whole system. It looks just like what you're looking for. Check out their website.

I almost always use a faux piped binding. It works great for doing a binding totally by machine. Look it up, you tube has tons of tutorials. I hate hand sewing. It makes a really attractive binding. I like it better than a hand sewn binding. If there is a way to avoid hand sewing I will find it.
