I'm in the oversize and then cut down camp. The tips take care of themselves that way.

I like my Creative Grids half square triangle ruler as it has the dog ears cut off already! I then can sew HST together by lining up the corners and going. The squares press open at just the right size.

For anything else with tips, it depends: am I going to have 16 layers at this intersection, or will it just be a few layers and the tips are hidden by the fabric color? For the in between cases, I pick one way and try to stick with it

I do a lot of paper piecing, and the tips always end up staying on those unless I'm joining wedges into a block. Then those tips get cut off.

Just finished a Kaleidoscope baby quilt with 63 6” blocks. I started cutting them off but eventually got lazy and left them. I can’t tell them apart in the finished quilt so I will probably be leaving them in the future.

You make some really good points (no pun intended) about this. I had the same issue when I had to take a block apart and realized I had to redo the hst since I cut off the tips. GRR!

my habit to cut them off as I go because years ago I saw someone else's ort jar full of dogears from just one quilt, so occassionally do the same like when making a bonnie hunter mystery. Lots of bulk and weight there. If I made big block quilts 12" + I probably wouldn't go out of my way, other than it is habit now. most of my blocks are 4-8" with Lots of pieces.

In the same vein, some years ago I gave myself permission to not give a hoot if the same fabric landed next to each other. A real breath of fresh air, and it doesn't bother me a bit in my finished quits. try it you might like it
