Thread & Batting Question
Hi all, I have what is probably a dumb question. I am making a bowl cozy. I am using 100% cotton fabric and Wrap-N-Zap. I have quite a few different threads. One of the fabrics I am using is a lovely shade of blue, the trouble is the only thread that I have that goes with this fabric has a label that states it's 100% long staple cotton satin finish thread. Would the satin finish on the thread make it bad for the project? I sure don't want the cozy to burn up in the microwave. I have a lot of Warm and Natural batting would this also be ok to use.
I appreciate ny help you all could give me.
Thank you so much.

The regular warm and natural is NOT 100% cotton - read the label carefully. Many of them say 80/20 in the contents. I am not sure what the satin finish means on the thread. If the thread says 100% cotton, it should be 100% cotton. I would definitely contact the company to get that clarified. We sell dozens of the soup cozies each month and have only had one problem (the lady did not remove the pin!) but we are very careful about the materials and we attach a small card stating it is to be used to reheat - not cook - items, use for 3 -5 minutes. BTW - we have used them for 8 minutes without any problems, but we prefer to err on the side of caution.

I have used Warm and Natural batting with no problem. What I do put a piece of batting between fabric in the microwave and set the timer for 3 minutes. I can tell right away if the batting will be a problem. The satin finish won't cause a problem and neither has the poly thread I have used without thinking. I make my bowls for family use and they know never over 3 min. Also it depends on the wattage of the microwave. 3 min at high wattage is much hotter then 3 min at low wattage. This is why I don't give or sale them. I always test the batting before using. I've had the same brand batting get burned in less then 2 min in one spot. A flaw or random thing in the batting may cause it to burn.

I was told that cotton batting with scrim is not acceptable in projects for the microwave. Scrim is polyester. So I always read the labels and make sure no scrim and I haven’t had a problem with the cozies.
