I've used cotton - and am partial to Guttermann....when it's on sale at Joanns, lol.
Have poly variegated from other places - and it works wonderfully for satin stitch applique and also free motion quilting....
I think it's just what your machine likes....!

For machine piecing my preference is Star cotton thread or the line that Connecting Threads has - I think it's called Essentials. For hand applique I prefer YLI silk although I do have some Kinkame and in a pinch will use any cotton thread. For machine applique I have no preference - color matching is the key for me. I do very little quilting so I let my LA make that selection, what little I do I use cotton.

So glad you asked this question. When I took the quilting class, it was mentioned to always use cotton. I never knew why. But I've always wanted to try variegated, but hesitated because it was poly. Think I'll walk on the wild side and get some! Thank you.

Mine too! I also find that with Aurfil I get more thread on the bobbin. I use this as my bobbin thread when quilting a baby quilt as I like to use all cotton thread on baby quilts. My other bobbin thread for quilting (HQ16) is So Fine, not a cotton thread but very nice.

I use variegated to quilt with about 99% of the time; 100% cotton. YLI and King Tut are both 100% cotton.

For piecing quilts, I prefer a good, mercerized cotton thread.
