Incidentally, Aurifil came in the 3rd least expensive.

I haven't had time to do the shoot out for the threads themselves, but here's the price comparison:

    Reb,
I really like Aurifil 50wt. for piecing quilts; its cotton. Awesome threads and low lint too. For machine quilting I prefer Superior's King Tut and YLI 40wt and Signature. Connecting Threads cotton thread is okay too.

This has been the most awesome response! Special kudos to ArchaicArcane for the financial side of thread and I look forward to your test results. I'm sure anyone following this thread on thread appreciates the work you are doing on your blog. I knew I'd get lots of quilter's personal favorites. Seems like Aurifil may be the most popular and with the price information I'm going to get started trying that myself. Thank you to everyone!

I always find threads on thread interesting.

Before I knew what I was doing I bought a LOT of Isacord thread (which is polyester) when I bought my used embroidery machine from a business owner off of craigslist. She had over 300 spools for a $1 apiece. DH encouraged me to buy it all. I love all of the color choices I have. I probably use it where many quilters wouldn't think of using it.

Would I do the same thing again if I had the chance... probably not. Because I found that you don't need every color variation of a particular color even for embroidery.

Great cost comparison!! Now I won't feel so bad buying Aurifil once in a while!

I like to buy sets from Connecting threads when they come on sale, I have a ton of different colors that way, so can usually find something to match. Cones and single spools are on sale now. I go with 100% cotton.
