What kind of thread do you use for top stitching/quilting. I have been making 30/30 wall hangings and often want the FMQ to match/blend in to the quilt top. I use neutral colors from Connecting thread for piecing so I have lots of them. But I do not have cotton thread to match tops so I have been using poly thread since there is a vatiety of colors. ( I really do not care about matching backing.) I think that for wall hanging that will not be washed often it makes no difference. But what about full size quilts? What kind of thread will hold up best under many washings. I always thought that poly thread will cut fabric. Opinions?

I use whatever thread will give the look & effect I want. Normally I use cotton machine quilting thread on the top and So Fine poly prewounds in the bobbin but have quilted with serger thread & even Coats & Clark Dual Duty sewing thread. I think the poly thread cutting through cotton fabric is a myth. Superior Threads has a fact sheet you might want to check out. I know a lot of my cotton & poly cotton clothing is sewn with poly & even nylon thread which gets washed & tugged on way more than any quilt.

Todays polyester thread is fine for quilting. Many use this now without the worries of it cutting the fabric :D:D:D
