While MaryKatherine may not be an experienced hand quilter ... she has the abilities to do it and at an exceptionally high calibre, as demonstrated by her hand stitched work in the past.

Definitely, goals to pace oneself is always good!

    ............. only 145 blocks/tris/kites to go.
My goodness MKath ... you're over 1/3 way done!

I've got 74 blocks done, so just behind you ....
... though mine are NOT being done by hand!
I haven't done any for a month now and am totally itchy to get back to them.
When I started this, I said no deadline, and I HAD to be able to do other projects. It's been working good for me. While I know I could get possessed with doing the DJs, I also know, that if I had tried to do it as a front-burner project, I would probably soon begrudge it.

So come on ... put it in B+W ... and then you know you have your commitment.
I think you are already there ... but just not wanting to over commit.
Sooooooo .... commit to yourself, with the up-front acceptance that if it does not get done on time, your heart will not be broken ... and life will go on!

After all ... school's almost out for the summer and you can go wild!!
Okay Okay! I'm so glad you're not a used car salesman!
That means I'll call on YOU when I get behind or overwhelmed.

Set some interim goals and deadlines to keep yourself on track. This will also help you feel like you are making good progress. Plus you can be sure you are not falling behind. These are up to you, but you could consider Finish x blocks by X date, finish assembly by x date, quilt by x date, leaving time for binding.

You know you were just wanting some co-conspirators to nudge you on to doing it!

    You're sure about that?

Your blocks are lovely! Are you planning to do QAYG? Makes life a bit easier I think. I just started hand quilting for the very first time and I love it. It's a huge learning curve and it takes a lot of time.
So I would say: go for it, you can do it ! ! !

Frankly I hadn't thought of that. ITs really attractive, but I wonder if it is true to the spirit of THIS quilt.
Maybe I should just stop thinking so hard.

    those are truly beautiful.

in my experience hand quilting is slower than empires. i quilt on a hoop and can load about 4 stitches on the needle at once. but...it's not grab and go. the quilt can't rest in the hoop, so every time i sit to quilt there is a process; make sure i know what i'm quilting (usually i use templates and because they wear off as i move the quilt, i draw as i go), mount the quilt, thread the needles, make tea....

you see where this is going. it's incredibly soothing and rewarding, but it is not fast. it took me more than a year to quilt my grand's queen size quilt, with the caveat that hand quilting in the summer is not so fun. being draped ina warm and cozy blanket when it's 40 degrees is no one's idea of a good time.

good luck with your project. it's utterly fantastic already

Are you planning on using scraps of clothes for your DJ? That's the real spirit of the original DJ IHMO So if you don't do that you can QAYG without feeling guilty I think.

I'll add that to the list as well. What I have been using are the charm squares I collected during 2/3 years of exchanges with my friends.
