When an instructor says it going to be a "Christmas Quilt", bring red, green and gold fabric, but it's really a 'star' quilt and I really like other colors better, is it OK to ignore the r-g-g suggestion and do my own colors or is that insulting to the teacher?

I wouldn't think so but ask the teacher of the class.

it shouldn't be insulting to her. if it is, that would be her problem, not yours. you are the one paying for the class. she is teaching a technique, not a specific quilt. bring what makes you happy. it might be difficult to follow, though, when she says 'cut from the green fabric' and you have to remember which is YOUR green fabric :) . you might want to make a small cheat sheet with a piece of each of your fabrics labeled red, green and gold, so you don't get mixed up.

I think Nan is on the right track. It might be confusing to use other colors, but I wouldn't think she'd be insulted. You were interested enough to take the class. Red, green, and gold wouldn't be my first choice of colors either.

I agree. Definately make a chart (cheat sheet) and bring it to class with your alternate fabrics marked with the suggested class colors.

I am forever changing the colors of a pattern and sometimes even the size or layout of the blocks.
