I have been using elmers school glue for over a year on my bindings for quilts etc, as long as you heat set the glue there isn't a problem. Sharon Schambers method is the best for bindings that I have tried. Following her procedure you do not need pins to hold the binding to the quilt as you stitch it on and when I turn the binding to the front I glue it again before I use a decorative stitch to stitch it down. Have never had a problem with the machine or needles with the elmers so far. When doing the Betty Cotton Theory you stitch the binding to the back and bring it to the front and use a decorative stitch. For other quilts I glue the binding to the front stitch it down and turn to the back andglue it down then just hand stitch . Never had a problem with the hand stitching either. Washes out when the project is washed.

Finished the iris stained glass....love it. The glue stick worked great, just a little bit held the leadline in perfect place. No gumming or blobbing on the needle. Will post a pic later.

this is very interesting. i've only used it to match seams and even that only within the seam allowances. i never thought of it's other uses. i guess because i don't applique. now i can see the possibilities.

I really like the glue method and use it quite often to match seams, use on bindings and most anything so I don't have to pin as much. Just remember a little goes a long way, never hurt my machines and washes right out. Just need little drops.

glue............this is something new to me.

I have never used it and not too sure just how to do so in sewing.

I think that it's about time (after reading all these posts about it) for me to find someone who uses it and get a demonstration.

looking for anything to make things easier.

Here's a demo of using glue to do the binding without pins.

It is much easier and quicker to use the fabric glue sticks. Just make sure it says water soluble or for fabric and you are good to go.

Diana - My metal tip on my Roxanne's glue doesn't work. It used to frustrate me but no more. I simply accept it and instead I use it to dip the glue out of the bottle and dab where I need it. Then I just wipe it off with a tissue and it's good to go for the next time I want to use it.

I just used it for the first time on applique (as mentioned in the other thread, butterflywing) after watching Sharon's applique and binding videos. The line of glue is very, very tiny using the metal tips I got at Joann's. It came with 4 different sized tips and two plastic bottles and it was in the fabric paint and pens aisle.

I heat set it and then did the blanket stitch. If I didn't know there was glue there would be no indication when sewing that there was. No problem with the needle, no gumming or flaking. I could see that maybe someone would have a problem trying to sew through not-quite-dry glue but the bead is so small and dried that I don't see it causing any issues.

I may try it on seam matching when it's VERY important that they be exact and not move when sewing.

In her video she shows a quilt that the applique was done with glue then stitched and has been used and washed and it's just as secure but the applique is loose in the middle like hand applique and gives it that soft look. She also has a video of doing applique on a long arm using the glue.

I use a little dab of glue stick to hold the first piece of fabric in place when PPing because amma told me to ! And it works great, after you take the paper off, you'd never know it was there. :-D
