The extra wide Moda is wonderful -- highly recommend it! Buy it from Fabric Depot in Portland.....

I use good quality muslin from JoAnns, Fabric.com. Keepsake Quilting. Love the look of muslin. Sheets don't shrink to give the crinkle look & not recommended for quilt backs.

I use muslin most of the time for my quilts. Legacy is the brand I buy. Good quality and I get it by the bolt at JoAnn's with 50% off coupon. Thats 15 yards.

I use a muslin from joanns fabric. Its 120" wide and cost about $8.00 yard. It works well for me, fairly good quality.

A lot of professional long armers won't take a sheet as backing because of the high thread count and the difference between the thread counts in the top and the sheet backing. Sheets are harder to quilt and dull needles faster. I have used a light muslin for batting for a light quilt, but not yet for backing. Having said that, I have come across muslin that I thought would be suitable for backing, but find it too plain to be pleasing. I prefer to dip into my stash for backings, and either I have enough of a fabric to make a backing (out of the same fabric), or I do a pieced backing. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I have used muslin from Joann's, also sheets and expensive fabric. Since I am not competing for any prizes, I now look for sheets ... not always 100% cotton but a deal at thrift shops..

I've been thinking I will go back to muslin for quilt backs. I'm currently hand quilting a quilt with a printed back and the stitches don't show much (a good thing!), but the quilted design doesn't either(not so good). And the price of printed fabric is a factor these days too. I've had good luck with Roc Lon and always pre wash to shrink. JMHO.
