I used to use the phone book pages for string quilting. Had no problem with print transfer but you had to watch out for newspaper print. The older the paper, the less transfer. Stop using all paper because I hated tearing all the paper from the back. I now use thin muslin. Makes the quilt a bit heavier but works well. Recently tried some tulle, that stuff you use to make little girls skirts. that worked out well, but I had trouble seeing the edges of the block. Happy Sewing.

Besides paper, usu Carol Doak's newsprint, I have used old catering tablecloths or napkins. That way, I didn't have to use batting & called them summer or porch quilts, like my grandmother did. Also, I had an old Kenmore that I used for piercing stacks of paper instead of the papers or the fabric. My newer machines won't let me do that as they have a sensor that says the bobbin is empty & won't stitch until I put in another one. Oh the joys & heartaches of computerized machines.

You don't get them with your land phone anymore either. When I got mine they wanted $25.00 for one.

Thanks girls for all your info..I was cleaning out a cabinet, and had a bunch of yellow pages phone books...and yes I still have a land line...AND I did keep a current white and yellow page phone book...you just never know when you might need one...Houston, Texas still puts out these books, but they are quite small now...I still have a Sears and JCPenny's catalog too...guess I might be a little on the hoarder side..., one for each year my granddaughters were born...they are 31 and 29 now...they get a kick out of looking at them...also one for when my great grandson was born in 2000...Saved calendars the years they were born also...
Years ago I found a calendar for my sister, the year she was born, 1950...did I mention I like old stuff...I have a room full of sewing things from the past...which makes nice decorations for my sewing room walls..get a lot of compliments on them....now back to the phone books...again, thanks for taking the time to answer my post...love my Quilting Board...

Yes you can! Just make sure the books are old enough that the ink is good and dry. You can check by rubbing a small piece of white fabric over the pages & see if it gets dirty. Phone books are cheap (free!) and you may as well use them since no one uses phone books anymore. Every year, there is a cart of free phone books printed by someone at my post office. So I have a lifetime supply!!

I let my fingers do the walking... on the ol' keyboard, asking Mr. Google.

I just bought a ton of quilt blocks at an antique store all pieced with the yellow pages. Very easy for me to remove the paper too.
