Variegated thread changes colors every 1/2"-1"(depending on the brand of thread), its used for machine quilting and embroidery. I think its very pretty.

I love King Tut thread, bought several spools when the LQS closed in August. The JoAnns closed just last month near me and I bought several spools of a different brand for great prices. Nancy's Notions carries varigated threads also.
