Patrice, the doxie is too cute. The glasses! How adorable is that?

There are some gorgeous things going on this weekend. I love the horses collecting maple syrup and the Dachshund always makes me smile.

Planning on finishing this lap quilt this weekend. Made it out of jelly rolls and honey buns. Problem is the border. I don't have enough strips of any one color to use as the border, so I'm trying to decide if I want to piece the border using small pieces of all the colors, or to use one color on the sides and one color on the top and bottom. Or use white. The darker pink is not in the quilt blocks but it coordinates ok and I'm planning on using that as binding.

Very pretty, I’d go with pieces of all the colours, but joined on the diagonal, it would echo the diagonals in your pieced blocks nicely.

OhCanada- rattail binding is a technique where you use a satin cord (I prefer 2mm size) and zigzag it onto the edge of your quilt. It seals the edges shut and is a little more decorative than just zigzagging them. I only use it on art quilts/ wall quilts. I don't think it would hold up well for a quilt that is meant to be used. Here's a pic of the one I finished yesterday and a detail showing the rattail binding.

janjanq, beautiful soft colors on your quilt.

rob, I too was wondering what rattail binding was. Cool technique.

I've been working on a couple applique projects. This afternoon I'm hoping to put my Swoon blocks together finally! Will check back in later.

Rob - that is a neat effect, do you use a particular type of machine foot to help attach? This art quilt is great!

Thanks,
I've tried several different ways of doing it and the foot I use is dependent on the machine I'm using. If I do the binding on my vintage Kenmore then I just do a narrow zigzag and use the zigzag foot. If I do the binding on my modern PC420PRW then I use an overcasting foot (Brother foot G) and choose an overcasting stitch that works for the fabric. This one was done on my PC420 so I used the Overcasting foot.

I've found that if the machine has wider spaced feed dogs (like some of the modern 7mm ones) then the overcasting foot is easier to use as it keeps the rattail against the edge of the fabric and also properly lined up with the feed dogs so that they are engaging both the fabric and the satin cord.

My Masonry top is half done. The top half. I am very happy. I went with larger sashing for the little groups of four. I just could not see myself dealing with squares of one inch.

That's an interesting use of rattail, Rob. I've couched it on to wearable art projects but never thought of using it as a binding. I think you're right about it not holding up when washed. I wouldn't use it for a quilt that was going to be used either.

Boston, I don't blame you. I just did 1" squares on this dachshund and they aren't fun at all. You would be dealing with a lot of them
