I just yse cold water and a color catcher. I LIKE the antique look of quilts with cotton batting that shrink a bit in the dryer. They look more "quilty"

I wash all my fabrics first. I can't stand the thought of Formaldehyde being on the fabric I use to quilt something for someone. Plus I just don't like handling it then touching my face. Then I wash and dry again once the quilt is completely finished.

The second I put that last stitch in the binding off they go to the washer. I don't even always remember to throw in the color catcher. They all come out fine.
What she said! Well, except for the washed fabrics part. I don't prewash. Ever.
I haven't ever prewashed either.

I pre-wash . I know forsure if my colors will run or not this way.. and it does help remove a little lint left over from manufacturing..

Up until the last quilt I finished, I always prewashed, starched and ironed every piece. What a job ironing so much fabric. :-( I have decided it isn't worth the trouble. The fabric feels nice and has 'hand' when it comes off the bolt and is easy to sew on. Why go through that whole routine! Now I will never wash the fabric first, but will always use a color catcher when I wash the finished quilt. So many on the board don't wash the fabric first and still their quilts come out beautifully. Why make more work for yourself, life it too short!!
