If the fabric is in smallish pieces you could put them in a lingerie bag or pillow case with color catchers to keep them contained.

I would worry about if you washed and then you didn't have enought to finish the quilt

I only got one kit from them and did not pre wash. It turned out great when I finished it and washed and dried it. I always pre wash and wash again after finishing all my quilts. I would not gift or stored an unwashed quilt.

This is probably a dumb question but if color catchers are used and there is no bleeding can the color catchers be reused?

I would worry about the same thing. I have only used CT for 2 wallhangings (kits).

I didn't prewash, but washed afterwards because I basted with Elmer's. One thing I WILL say is that all of their fabric feels the same (and I think it's nice). So my assumption would be that it would "shrink" the same. I'm old school and always prewashed my fabrics. When I began working on charity quilts with others, I heard that they didn't pre-wash. I haven't prewashed since and like sewing with the "virgin" fabric a lot more than prewashed. Every quilt is washed afterwards with a color catcher. My color catchers (Shout) never ave any of the catching stuff left after a wash cycle so I don't feel they are reusable.

I'm also a Big Fan of Connecting Threads, I've never washed their fabric before use but like Jan I wash every quilt when it's finished. Connecting Threads has some GREAT buys from there catalog and on line.

It is not recommended that you pre-wash kits because of the many smaller pieces. But, it is recommended that a quilt project, except perhaps wall hangings, be washed. I know I always do because I want to know if everything is OK. I want the fabric and batting to shrink uniformly. I do not have problems with chemicals in the manufacturing and I certainly add dirt, glue, starch to facilitate making the project and I want that taken out before gifting. I went through a phase of washing all fabric I brought home and found that I prefer working with unwashed fabric in the construction process. When I wash a project I use a color catcher. If I get a catcher with lots of color I usually wash the quilt again using a new color catcher. I do this before I dry the quilt. I dry mine on a plastic sheet on the floor. Rarely do I get color on the second color catcher.
