Much as I hate to say it, I would advise washing too.

A friend gave me a big box of fabric that had been her mother's. I used some pretty corduroy to make a small pouch type purse and when I was turning it rightside out the fabric split. I was SO not a happy camper! Apparently it had developed dry rot. None of the rest of the fabric seemed to be affected, just that one piece.

Mine seems to be doing good and surviving great so far. Even gave some tugs to see if it might come apart, afterwards. I am a happy camper!!
