I might go for the social aspect, and if anyone questions why you are not sewing, be honest, telling them you just had hand surgery and the Dr. hasn't cleared you for quilting yet. Your friends should understand.

I would go and take a small hand project. Tell your friends your hand just isn't up to that much hand sewing. Try the project you have and if it hurts just enjoy your friends. I am sure that will be fine.

I like the friendship trivet idea. It will always remind you of the pleasure you get from being with your friends, it will involve you without involving a painful hand, and my guess is that some folks would rather be working on the trivet than on the wedding ring quilt!
