I know that eventually when my skills are good enough I will probably want to do that but my quilting skills really are incredibly basic at the moment (I only learnt to FMQ successfully 2 months ago and can only meander at the moment). So I need to do simple!

I use a dark taupe. It blends in to a lot of colors. To test which color to use, I'll unwind about 18" of thread and lay it out on the fabrics. I might lay out cream, taupe and grey and see which one blends best.

I used Invisafil on a quilt with a lot of background space. I used the grey/silver color on an ivory background and it was almost invisible. Just the quilting showed, not the thread. It was a bit finicky in my Juki but I lowered the upper tension and it was fine. I was doing FMQ on the quilt.
